Jump to RecipePIzza with chickpeas and basil.

I was skeptical the first time we tried this recipe, but now it is one of my favorite pizza toppings. Pizza chickpeas are seasoned and roasted balls of flavor. They taste similar to adding Italian sausage to a pizza.

How to Make Pizza Chickpeas

To make pizza chickpeas you need to start with canned chickpeas that have been rinsed and dried. I like to place them in a towel after rinsing and slightly rub them dry.

Once your chickpeas are ready, heat the olive oil in a pan. Add in the chickpeas and all the spices. You are going to cook them for awhile until they are nice and crispy and all the spices start to cook onto the chickpeas.

How to Use Pizza Chickpeas

In this recipe we are using them on a pizza but you can also use the pizza chickpeas on a salad, in a wrap, or even in a pasta sauce. Unless you are making multiple pizzas, you will probably have extra chickpeas from this recipe. Feel free to add them to something else or just snack on them as is.

Benefits of Chickpeas

I love adding chickpeas to a pizza because chickpeas are a highly nutritious addition. These small beans are an excellent source of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including iron, magnesium, and folate. Additionally, chickpeas are relatively inexpensive and have a long shelf life, making them a convenient and budget-friendly food choice that I always have on hand.

Ingredients

Chickpeas

  • 1 can (14 ounce) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp minced onion
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano

Pizza

  • 1 pizza dough, homemade or store bought
  • tomato sauce, about 1/2 cup
  • 6oz of mozzarella
  • Basil for topping

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 550°F.
  2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Place them in a towel to pat them dry to remove excess water. Some of their skins might come off during this process. They are fine to eat but you can remove them if you prefer.
  3. Put the chickpeas in a bowl and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add in the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper flakes, oregano, basil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Toss to combine.
  4. Heat the other tablespoon of olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chickpeas and let them get crispy for 15-20 minutes. Toss them occasionally while they cook to make sure all sides get nice and crispy. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  5. Prep the pizza dough. (Depending on the type you have you might just place the pizza dough on a baking sheet or if you made your own you can stretch it on your pizza peel).
  6. Add you tomato sauce and mozzarella to the pizza dough. Top with about half of the chickpeas. Use the other half on another pizza or store them for later.
  7. Bake the pizza for about 7-10 minutes or until edges of the pizza are golden.
  8. Sprinkle with fresh basil and serve.
